Cabochard by Gres Women's Fragrance

Alix Gres was a free spirit and always marched to the beat of her own drum. Her fragrance, Cabochard, is a fragrant image of her. Even the name, chosen by Madame Gres herself (in French Cabochard means \stubborn\or \headstrong\) reflects this free-spirited woman. Cabochard was created after Madame Gres\' trip to India. She described a beautiful perfume to the young perfume creator Guy Robert – very flowery, rich like tuberose yet softer, contrasted by fresh, slightly green note. It was a water hyacinth! After several trials, Madame Gres recognized her perfume. It was light and floral. For over fifty years, Cabochard has been one of the world’s most popular scents, mentioned many times by the media and prestigious fragrance blogs. Madame Gres said that it reminded her of her walks along the long and empty beaches of India: sharp freshness of the morning air, warmth of sandalwood, a touch of flower and comfort of the sea breeze.

About Gres:
Madame Alix Gres (nee Germaine Emilie Krebs) was born in 1903 in Paris, France. She desired to be a sculptor but switched to women’s hat making instead. Her first fashion house, "Alex Couture," opened in 1934 and marked the shift toward couture. Madame Gres is a French perfume house that was created in 1917. During World War II and the German occupation of France, Madame Gres, patriotic to the core, was designing clothes around the three colors of France—blue, white and red. The first perfume of the Gres house, Cabochard, was created in 1958, after Madame Gres returned from a trip to India. Cabochard was inspired by a new generation of perfumes, including Tabac Blond (1919), Cuir de Russie (1924), Scandal (1933), and Bandit (1944). Madame Gres designed gowns in the same fashion as sculpting directly on the bodies of her models. Madame Gres had to sell her perfume business for the sake of her fashion house. The company Parfums Gres changed hands several times until it was finally bought by Silvio Denz in 2001. Today Parfums Gres is based in Switzerland. The first perfume launched by the new owner was Cabaret (2003), after which comes Cabaret Homme (2004) and Caline (2005). Madame Gres died in 1993, but her death was not announced until a year later, on December 14, 1994, in Le Monde.
